MEmber profiles

Ken Seideman (piano)

Ken Seideman has over 10 years of classical piano training. However, as a teenager, he attended an Emerson, Lake, and Palmer concert and was inspired by Keith Emerson’s style. He consequently quit classical lessons and pivoted to a new musical direction.

In the 1970s, Ken was a member of multiple bands in Santa Barbara, including a New Wave cover band called IQ-Zero. When one of his bandmates landed a record deal with RCA, Ken packed up and moved to Manhattan, only for the record deal to collapse. Subsequently, Ken tried to make it as a musician in New York, doing session work, playing in piano bars, and serenading customers in a men’s clothing store. After spending three years as the stereotypical “starving musician,” Ken packed it up and moved back to California to finish college and embark on a long and successful career as a certified public accountant. He never stopped playing piano, however, practicing almost nightly.

Ken is the proud father of two adult children, one energetic dog, and 2 wild rabbits that live under the shed in his backyard.

Ed Molyneaux
(bass)

Ed started playing the violin when he was 9 years old, studying with Ralph Wade, an elderly Englishman who had played for many years at London's Drury Lane Theatre. Ed played in a jazz orchestra in high school that performed with jazz greats Clark Terry, Slam Stewart, Count Basie alumni Joe Jones and Frank Wess, Bucky Pizzerili, and Toots Thielmans.

After college, Ed spent a year in Taiwan, playing bluegrass, country, and classic rock in clubs and hotels, and performed a Chinese song on the country's top-rated TV variety show, "Heavenly Island". He returned to the states for further schooling and continued work as a musician. One of his bands opened for The Marshall Tucker Band, The Bellamy Brothers, Jerry Reed, and Doug Kershaw.

The demands of parenthood and his day job led Ed to put music on the back-burner for a couple of decades, but he returned in the last 10 years to his early love of jazz, this time as a bass player. He's recently retired from his day job (leaving the drafting of software license agreements in the capable hands of his colleagues) and is delighted to be playing in the Ken Seideman Jazz Trio.

Tim Caldwell (drums)

Tim Caldwell learned his drum rolls and rudiments under the watchful eye of 1960’s Rogers Drum Company endorsee Harold “Skip” Falls at Forest Music in Berkeley, CA. As an adult, Tim took advanced brush lessons from drummer and author Cary Nasatir and group lessons at the Berkeley Jazz Conservatory from drummer and author Colin Bailey. Tim was able to attend drum clinics in the Bay Area and LA given by drumming legends Louie Bellison, Ed Shaughnessy, and John Barbata.

Since 2010, Tim has played his vintage Rogers kit at over 75 different venues, mainly in the polka and jazz genres. These music gigs have been at country clubs, private parties, corporate events, festivals, restaurants, microbrew pubs, and senior centers. Tim feels fortunate to be stirring the brushes and pounding the skins with top pros like Ken and Ed in the Ken Seideman Jazz Trio.
